April 2008

As we have mentioned before, there are more and more women who are becoming shooters. Many do it because they realize that they can be responsible for their own safety, while others are simply enjoying the competitive shooting sports.

We noticed that we were getting a lot of traffic from Women and Guns. This is an online community designed for women shooters to share information and tips on guns, gear and shooting. We don’t know much about them, but what we have seen looks pretty good. If you are one of your friends is interested in shooting, check it out.

Thanks to all the lady shooters out there that are making a difference and putting MCC out there. You may also want to check out our 3 part series on Women Shooters.

We received word today from one of our customers that CMMG has discontinued their bargain bin AR program. We assume they are temporarily out, and we hope that they will bring it back when supplies are available again. This same customer also said that the Smyrna, TN gun show didn’t have much in the way of AR’s available, and the ones that were there were going for more than they were a few months ago. So what’s the deal?

It is not only AR’s that are hard to find right now, but any popular gun you can think of seems to be in short supply. This generally happens anytime there is an election where people are uncertain about their gun rights future. If you are concerned about getting an AR, we advise that you do it now along with plenty of ammo. You should also think about joining the NRA as a life member if you haven’t already. Whether you like them or not, they are the best advocate you have for your gun rights.

In the meantime we will keep you posted if we find anymore AR deals out there.

Here is a tactical no no. It is not cool to have a CCW badge displayed. If you are that guy and no one has told you, it looks goofy. Let’s just remember the reason that we have CCW permits; for Concealed Carry!!! The other day at the Nashville Gun Show I saw way too many people wearing these. Let’s run this over.

If you are trying to conceal your weapon it is not cool to let everyone know that you have one. Secondly, you just might get in a situation where someone may think you are a cop, which you are not. You are citizen with a gun, but you might be accused of impersonating a police officer. I know we all wanted to be cops growing up, but this is not even close. Leave the badges to the professionals. Finally, everyone who knows anything about fighting, combat and survival immediately knows you are a pretender. So keep some respect among your peers. Better to be thought of as wise, than to wear a CCW badge and be confirmed a wannabe.

I was listening to Guntalk the other day and I was reminded that a CCW is not a license to leave your common sense at home. When you get the permit to carry a weapon it doesn’t turn you into Rambo. In the real world heroes often die as in Black Hawk Down, they don’t always come out on top with minor injuries. The decision to carry a weapon will not offer you anymore security if you don’t look out for danger and stay away from trouble.

It is too easy to become puffed up with pride and forget that you can still get hurt if you choose to place yourself in bad situations. In Nashville where we live, Adam Pacman Jones is at the forefront of the line for those who don’t know how to stay out of trouble. Is anyone surprised that there might be trouble at strip club? Where you go can get you hurt, CCW or not.

So when you choose to get your permit make sure you stay away from all the places you know will be nothing but trouble. Your CCW just minimizes your chance of being a victim. Don’t negate that minimized chance by going to places that elevate your threat levels.

I want to make you aware of a great leather company for your competitive and CCW needs. While the onset of kydex materials has brought prices into the reasonable range, there is still something special about leather. We have been using and recommending Wild Bill’s Concealment Holsters for about 7 years. They offer a wide variety of options for all your CCW needs, but we really like their Speed Scabbards as pictured here;

This holster provides great stability and keeps the gun close to your body. It is well built, and for the money is hard to beat when you pair it with a mag pouch and belt.

We also love their double-thick belts. They look great and offer unbelievable support for your weapon. They come in 3 great colors and 3 widths. Give Bill a call and tell him Mossy Creek sent you (no we don’t get anything out of it).

This is awesome. I hope that they will bring it to full production. I can see so many uses for this gun.

We were on the phone the other day with one of our distributors and were told that ammo is going up again. It wasn’t that long ago that a day of shooting could be done for under $20, if you were shooting 9mm. Now that is jeopardy. Let me give you a few options that will help you continue to enjoy shooting.

1. Shoot plenty of 22lr. You can have a great time and still get in good practice sessions with 22lr. In the Articles Section I mentioned that everyone needs to start with a 22lr pistol and rifle. You can also buy conversion kits for Glocks, Berettas, 1911’s and AR-15’s.

2. Buy a 9mm pistol. If you aren’t really enthusiastic about the 22lr the 9mm will be the cheapest to shoot in a major caliber.

3. Buy an AK variant. The 7.62×39 round is still one of the cheapest ammos available for rifle shooting.

4. Start reloading. For rifle you can get an RCBS Rock Chucker press or an automated press for pistol from Dillon or Hornady. You will quickly recoup the cost of the press if you are a high volume shooter. You can estimate that you will save about 1/2 the cost of a box of ammo by reloading. Reloading is not hard if you are patient and pay attention to detail. In truth it is a great way to pass the winter months when shooting is difficult because of weather.

5. Don’t like any of these options? Buy an Airsoft gun. These replicas shoot semi-auto with a propellant called green gas. We have seen an increase in Airsoft sales to our Law Enforcement contracts. They love the realism and find them great for training in areas where simunitions or paint balls are not feasible.

Below you will find a recall that Ruger has issued. I received this yesterday from the Tennessee Instant Check Division. I have also heard from another TN dealer that they had an SR9 go full auto at the range. Please pay attention to this and follow all instructions below if your gun falls in this category.

Sturm Ruger has stated: “We have determined that some Ruger SR9 pistols manufactured between October 2007 and April 2008 can, under certain conditions, fire if dropped with their manual safeties in the “off” or “fire” position. The pistols will not fire if the manual safe is in the “on” or “safe” position. We will retro fit all Ruger SR9 pistols starting with serial number prefix “330″ (330-xxxxx) with these new parts at no charge to our customers. In order to ensure correct fitting, this new part must be installed at our Ruger factory in Prescott, Arizona. We will remove the old parts and install the new group promptly, at no charge, and will return the pistol to you. The old parts will not be returned.”

Step 1: Contact us and provide your name, address, telephone number and SR9 serial number.

Provide your information by any of the following:

E-Mail: SR9Recall@ruger.com

Fax: 928 541-8873

Phone: SR9 Recall Hotline—-1 800 784-3701 (available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time)

Ruger’s website: SR9 Recall on-line form

Step 2: When we are ready to retrofit your SR9, we will send you a shipping label and shipping box with instructions so you can return your pistol to us FREE of charge.

Step 3: We will install the new trigger group in your SR9 and return it to you FREE of charge. When we do, we also will send you a FREE extra magazine as a “thank your” for your patience and cooperation. We will make every effort to return your pistol within one week, so we will not ask you to send it to us until we are ready to receive it. We expect to begin sending shipping labels and boxes in mid-May.

Do not load or fire your pistol until it has been factory retrofitted with these new parts! If you must fire your pistol, be sure to keep the manual safety in the”on” or “safe” position except when you are actually firing.

Thank you,

Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.

We haven’t personally used one of these, but it is idea that may require consideration. We love the versatility that is offered. It retails for $29.95 at Innovative Tactical Concepts.

This past week I had the opportunity to shoot a Walther P22. I have very limited time with Walther products, but they seem to be well made and perform well. Everything with gun functioned flawlessly and it shot to point of impact. What made it special was that it was fitted with a suppressor.

I have shot a few guns with suppressors, and it’s not always what you think. It is very rarely like the movies. I remember shooting a suppressor of questionable quality that really didn’t live up to the hype. Buying one for you 22lr will make it very quiet. In fact we didn’t use any hearing protection. I don’t want to get into the particulars of why a suppressor works or doesn’t, but I do want to let you know what to expect if you are going to buy one for your gun.

Remember that you will need a Federal Tax Stamp. This is not incredibly difficult to get, but you will have to fill out some paperwork and pay $200. One you have that paperwork in hand you can take possession of the suppressor from your Class III dealer. You must always keep the paperwork with the suppressor , and you must notify the ATF if you are traveling across state lines with your suppressor.

The main advice I would give you is that you need to buy from someone who works in Class III firearms all the time. They can make the difference for you. If you get a chance to get to shoot a demo of the one you are looking at, even better. Just remember, buyer beware.
