March 2008

In upcoming posts I will be discussing the difference between 1911’s and Glocks. This post and the one on Wednesday will show you animations of both guns, and I will have some pictures and commentary on Friday. Hopefully that will give you a better understanding of both weapons systems. This animaiton will help you understand how the Glock works during its firing cycle. It starts slow with the trigger pull so focus there.

The other day I was at an outdoors store with a friend when I noticed something that really deserves a tactical award. Many of you are familiar with the 5.11 line of tactical clothing. They make some really great stuff, including a vest that many IDPA competitors are wearing. Good for IDPA, bad for a day at the mall.

What amazes me about these vests is how many people feel like they are great concealment garments for every day life. If you are wearing this out and about you are screaming GUN!! at the top of your lungs, beside the fact that you look like you just arrived back from safari. The idea is to not draw attention to yourself, but too many people don’t get that. Wearing a tactical vest to the mall is almost as cool as wearing blue socks and sandals; but not quite. Yes, it’s actually worse.

As soon as I saw the gentleman wearing this vest it was painfully obvious he was carrying because the gun was printing so badly. If you are going to carry concealed, do it inconspicuously. After all that is the point of the word concealed.

MCC is the newest addition to the Ghost family.  As many of you the Ghost products are the best when it comes to doing a trigger job on your Glock.  They also sell some great mag releases and sights you may want to check out.  If Ghost has it we can take care of it for you from a sales and installation standpoint.  If you have been thinking about tweaking your Glock, now is the time!

If you are into competitive shooting, you know how a fast reload often makes the difference between 1st and 2nd place. Check out Travis as he reloads. Incidentally he is a AMU (Army Marksmanship Unit) shooter. When you load like this, it really helps.

Many of our customers compete in IDPA, which stands for International Defensive Pistol Association. IDPA was started as a response to the direction that other shooting sports were taking in regards to gamesmanship and equipment races. To compete in IDPA, all you is a serviceable weapon in 9mm or larger, a holster, a mag pouch and a concealment garment.

IDPA is great because it teaches shooters things like the use of cover, reloading under stress, and shooting on the move. However, it is still a game. When training for IDPA or any other shooting discipline you need to remember that when stress comes, you are going to shoot the way that you have trained whether it be for competition or real life.

With that in mind, you need to be very careful how you use your range time. Don’t just go and hose down a target without thinking. When I have a lot of time, I love to one shot draws followed by two shot draws for about 50 rounds. I then go to shooting while moving. And you might as well use the stuff you are going to be using in competition or on the street. That goes for cops as well. I know its cumbersome, but make sure you are shooting with your duty rig and vest on from time to time.

When it really counts you want to be ready. Make sure you are by training by using your time and ammo wisely.

A great example of why you need to be careful who teaches you to shoot. If you notice, no ear protection, no eye protection, and the gun is mounted wrong. This poor girl got a nice ring on her face from the scope. All because she was “taught” how to shoot. She should have broken the stock across the head of her great teacher.

If you are not a great shooter who is very familiar with firearms, let someone else teach your loved one how to shoot. Swallow your pride, so your “student’ doesn’t eat the scope like this young lady did.

So you’ve decided it’s time to get your girlfriend, wife or daughter her first gun. What should it be? Or you’re a lady who has decided to take responsibility for your own protection. Which gun is right for you? At MCC we always recommend that someone’s first handgun be a 22 long rifle. Why? Because it is the lightest recoiling gun available cheap to shoot, and will teach to shoot properly.

Please don’t go out and buy your wife some kind of titanium 38 special or357 magnum for her first gun. Not only will she be done shooting after her first shot, she will probably never learn to shoot well because she will be afraid of the gun. You want to make sure that shooting is an enjoyable, safe experience for your loved one.

A great gun to consider would be a Taurus revolver in 22lr. You won’t have to spend a lot to get a solid little gun, and when your loved one becomes proficient you can sell it easily or keep it for plinking. In addition, you simply the process of using a gun. A semi auto as a present without training is worthless.

I realize that 22lr is not the preferred caliber for defense, but it is better than nothing. As your new shooter progresses, you can always move up to something in 38 special or 9mm. Just make sure you give her every opportunity to enjoy shooting and it will take care of itself.

A man is Wisconsin has been convicted of a felony because his AR-15 malfunctioned and shot two rounds at once. Lou Dobbs reported on this. Check out the link below.

A growing trend in almost every part of the gun business is that more and more women are becoming customers, shooters, and competitors. This is a great thing. MCC believes that if you have guns in your home, your spouse should at least be able to know how to handle one in case for some reason she needs to move it or secure it. Of more importance is the issue of defense.

Women are becoming increasingly aware that they have more options when it comes to their personal defense than just dialing 911. MCC supports every aspect of Law Enforcement, but the reality is that they can’t always be there as quickly as you need them. CNN has picked up on this trend in a great piece. More Women Getting Trained

I noticed the other day that there were a ton of posts out there gathering some attention. These posts encourage you to do a $0.25 trigger job by simply using some polishing compound to “really slick up your Glock.” Will you see any results? Doubtful. But hey, what do you expect for a quarter? Surely you aren’t about to do this and think you are going to get a great trigger job. That would be crazy, and you are so much smarter than that. If someone told you to take your 1911 or AR apart and do a trigger job with some polish, would that sound legitimate? Give me a break.

Doing some polishing is simply polishing. We polish parts all the time, but we don’t call it a trigger job, and you shouldn’t buy into that. To smooth things up the way they should be will require stoning at the least.

So if you have nothing better to do this weekend, get some polish and experiment. You want it done right? Get it done right the first time.
